Who are we?
Well it’s mostly me, Charlotte Cochrane, and Made Below was conceived, well, down below.
After the joys of running a successful upholstery business from my cellar, I was struck by an idea. Instead of reupholstering sometimes shoddily made sofas with dull designs, why not design and craft long-lasting pieces right here in Manchester? Why not harness local talent and beautiful British materials to make pieces of real quality and character, unlike anything else for sale? Made Below was born!
Ultimately I wanted to reject mass-produced furniture that lacks quality and individuality and create something ‘hyper-local’ made by human hands that care. After a year of prototyping and planning, bleeding fingers and thinking too much, my mission was beginning to take shape.
What I enjoy most is creating ‘small batch’ collections. I use beautiful wools from one of the UK’s oldest mills, sustainably sourced wood for our timber frames, and our legs are individually hand-turned by Phil, (our Wood Man extraordinaire) from UK-grown oak and beech.
I hope that by creating more of a connection between the maker and consumer, we can instil a more sustainable and thoughtful consumption of furniture.
